Yukon Cares, a refugee sponsorship group, is planning to resettle another family in the territory. The group has been helping families since 2015, during the Syrian refugee crisis. They have sponsored a new refugee family every year to year and a half. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many challenges as the government Blended Visa Office-Referred (BVOR) program was put on hold. The last family sponsored by Yukon Cares came at the beginning of 2020 from South Africa. The mother and her three daughters made it to Canada the day Trudeau said the country was shutting down to anyone who was not Canadian, because of the global pandemic. Two years after the shutdowns, Meagan Christie, a member of the Yukon Cares team, said many lessons were learned about ways to welcome the new family it is planning to sponsor as soon as the program reopens.

The global crisis
The global crisis has caused refugee resettlement difficulties, because of travel restrictions and much slower application processes. Christie remembers picking up the family in early 2020 with masks on and distancing themselves. They took them to their new home and left them to quarantine for the next few weeks. Although everyone tried to make it a warm welcome, it was difficult. They talked to them on Zoom and introduced themselves. There were no opportunities to get together in public places and be in the community. One family opened their basement to the children so the mother could learn English at her home.
